ISO 9004 is a document that can be used in conjunction with the ISO 9001 standard to create a quality management system. ISO 9004 is not intended for certification, regulatory, or contractual usage, as is ISO 9001. It was most recently modified in 2009 to meet the ISO 9001 2008 version, and should not be confused with ISO 9014, which is a common misspelling and does not exist. It adheres to similar terms to the ISO 9001 standards standard.
While ISO 9001 sets the requirements for a QMS, ISO 9004 guides organizations seeking to achieve sustained success beyond the basic ISO 9001 requirements. Organizations can use ISO 9004 to identify opportunities for improvement and develop strategies to enhance their overall performance.
