Shrinkage

Shrinkage refers to the time or percentage of time during which employees are paid but are not available to handle their primary responsibilities, often measured in customer service or call center environments. Shrinkage is a crucial metric in industries where workforce availability directly impacts service delivery, like Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

Planned time off, including leaves and holidays, contributes to shrinkage as employees are not available for work during these periods. Scheduled breaks, such as lunch breaks and rest periods, are considered in shrinkage calculations as employees are not actively handling calls during these intervals. Activities that take employees away from handling calls, such as training sessions, meetings, or administrative tasks, are part of shrinkage. Shrinkage metrics assist in managing and maintaining service levels by accounting for the time when employees are not available for customer interactions.
